Support Indie Business: A Letter from The Manager

Hi! My name is Julie Harleman. I am the buyer and operations manager at Slash Clothing on College Avenue. As you know, we have been in business in the Elmwood for over 30 years, and have grown and adjusted to the neighborhood over the years. We love the neighborhood and our customers and are so grateful to have been a part of Elmwood since 1979. I wanted to let you guys know about a major problem going on on College Avenue right now.

We have been retailing a brand called Goorin Brothers for nearly ten years. This brand is also carried by another Berkeley independent business less than half a mile away on Telegraph Ave, Berkeley Hat Company. Goorin is a San Francisco based company, but they are by NO means a small business. They have shops all over San Francisco and are currently in the works for putting a shop in at 2926 College Ave, just doors down from our business at 2840 College.

Why is this a problem? For starters, they are a huge, global company, appealing to the idea of being a small business by talking up their San Francisco roots, while they are currently opening stores all over the country. They have three stores in San Francisco, and stores in Los Angeles, Portland, Seattle and Chicago. But most importantly to us and to the Elmwood Neighborhood, the weekend before Christmas, our biggest shopping weekend of the year, Goorin Brothers has put in a three day sample sale pop-up shop in the location they wish to open a store, without any warning to us, an independent small retailer of their product. We have THOUSANDS of dollars worth of their product in our store, and we were not warned, asked, or considered when this decision was made. They did not offer to buy back the product we carry. They did not give us any compensation whatsoever. We simply cannot compete with less-than-wholesale prices for the same exact product that we carry. It is clearly evident to us that Goorin Brothers has a cut-throat manner of running their business and I believe it is in direct opposition to the kinds of businesses we want in the Elmwood.

We ask for your support in opposing Goorin Brothers in Berkeley. If this establishment does open, please be aware and do not spend your money with that company.

Thank you for your time.

Julie Harleman

PLAID FRIDAY! Support Indie Businesses This Holiday!

SLASH is participating in PLAID FRIDAY! We will be running a special on graphic t-shirts from 11/27-12/31 : Buy one at regular price and get the second one 40% off.

Stop by on November 27 for free goodies too! Giveaways, refreshments, and general fun times!

The name Plaid Friday celebrates the diversity and creativity of Bay Area independent businesses. Envisioned to be the independent business alternative to the big box store "Black Friday", Plaid Friday is designed to help raise awareness about shopping local and supporting the local economy.

Although the designation of this day is a new concept, the movement towards supporting the independent spirit and "Indie" Businesses of the Bay Area has been growing and expanding year by year. In early 2009, The East Bay Express launched a monthly guide to shopping local called the Indie Resolution, where patrons pledge to spend money at local establishments. Other local movements include Buy Local Berkeley, Oakland Grown and Oakland Unwrapped. Plaid Friday was created by two local independent businesses, Blankspace Gallery and the Compound Gallery, as a way to tie into this movement and elevate the awareness of the abundant and thriving independent businesses located in neighborhoods throughout the East Bay.

Help us celebrate by supporting participating shops on Friday, November 27th and throughout this Holiday season.

Wear plaid on November 27th to show your support while shopping at participating businesses. Look for the special plaid placards at your local shops.

Brand New ! Our very own PERFECT HOODIE!!!!!!!

Tired of searching for the perfect hoodie that you will love til it falls apart? The one necessary item you will absolutely live in every day? Tired of succumbing to the standard issue white zippered hoodie you see everywhere just because you don't have anything else to rely on?

Well, folks, the search is FINALLY OVER!

We have entered into the design business with our very first product: THE PERFECT HOODIE! Extra slim, long, thick and durable, our hoodie is produced in our beloved East Bay down in Union City at a very cool family-run manufacturer. We've got this unisex hoodie in 7 awesome colors: black, grey, brown, army green, red, maroon, and purple, and we'll be adding colors and sizes this winter. For only $40.00 (tax included!) you will never need to look for a hoodie again. Slim enough to wear under a jacket, but warm enough to wear all by itself.

Perfect for girls and guys. For guys, this fit runs small. Size up from your regular size. For girls, size down from your regular size. (Ex: get a M if you wear a women's L)
